  • MorningCheck out and head for the lake: the family drives you to the Cocales shuttle pickup, or a private driver takes you straight to Panajachel (see below).
  • MiddayDrop-off at the Panajachel dock area. Tuk-tuk 15 minutes to Santa Catarina Palopó and check in.
  • EveningSettle in and have an easy dinner nearby. If you have energy, Simoneta in Pana is open tonight and closed Sun–Mon, so tonight is your shot at its cocktails.
Getting to the lake from Tecojate:
Option 1: the Cocales junction. The 8am El Paredón → Panajachel shuttles drive inland through Cocales on their way to the lake. Cocales is about 1 hr 20 min from Tecojate. Ask Atitrans (+502 3465 2828, shuttle@atitrans.net, $35 pp) or Turisteando ($32 pp) to pick you up there and give you a time, then have the family drive you. Not confirmed yet, so ask when you book. Book 2 days ahead.
Option 2: a private driver. Tecojate to Panajachel is about 3 hr 10 min by car. Ask the family or your host for a trusted local driver and agree on the price first.
El Paredón itself is no longer a practical backup: it's over 2 hours from Tecojate by road.
Route note: From Cocales the road climbs through Patulul and Godínez. Shuttles run it daily, but Guatemala's tourist-assistance service flags that stretch for crime, so stick to the morning departure and arrive in daylight.

Book before you go

Tecojate · 2 nights

The coast

Tecojate is a small fishing village on the Pacific, about 15 minutes from the family and 3½ hours from the airport. There are no real hotels nearby, so these are Airbnb houses. Every one has A/C and a pool.

Places to stay · Nov 19–21

Price guide: two adults, two nights, Airbnb fees included. Searched October 5, 2026. Only places a short drive from Tecojate are listed: Sipacate and El Paredón look close on a map but are over 2 hours away by road. Map pins are approximate until you book. None of these lists hot water, which is normal on this coast.

Villa El Faro GT

Tecojate
Map

$429 for 2 nights · about $214/night

Our first choice: in Tecojate itself, about 15 minutes from the family. A gated beach complex with a pool, the sea about 100 m away and a lagoon for paddling. Two bedrooms (a king and two queens), A/C and Wi-Fi.

Keep in mind: One review so far (5★). That price is non-refundable; the refundable rate is $469. Over the $150/night guide. Check-in is 3pm, so see the family first or ask about early check-in. The same host has a twin listing at $496 if this one fills.

Casa Entre Palmeras

$210 for 2 nights · about $105/night

The value pick, and the only one under the $150/night guide. Run by a Superhost rated 4.73 across 75 reviews, with A/C, a rooftop pool, hammocks and sunset views.

Keep in mind: Built for groups of up to 10. No Wi-Fi. Two reviews on this listing. About 30 minutes from Tecojate on unpaved roads. Check-in 3pm, checkout 11am.

Casa Mia

West of Tecojate · ~30 min drive
Map

$370 for 2 nights · about $185/night

A modern two-bedroom beach house with A/C, a pool, fire pit and barbecue. The one guest review praises attentive hosts.

Keep in mind: No Wi-Fi. That review (4★) mentions about 6 km of dirt road and no stores nearby, so bring supplies. Check-in 2–4pm.

Villa with private beach

West of Tecojate · ~30 min drive
Map

$418 for 2 nights · about $209/night

Two bedrooms with A/C and Wi-Fi, a pool, an outdoor kitchen and private beach access. Run by a management company rated 4.35 across 40 reviews.

Keep in mind: New listing with one review. Sleeps 12, so more house than you need. Check-in 2pm.

Listing & photos

Beach house with mangrove views

West of Tecojate · ~30 min drive
Map

$557 for 2 nights · about $279/night

The most-reviewed option nearby: 4.38 from 13 reviews, from a host rated 4.71 across 58. A/C, Wi-Fi, a pool and mangrove views near the beach.

Keep in mind: Sleeps 16+ and costs the most. Check-in 2–6pm.

Listing & photos

If you'd rather have a hotel: there isn't a working one near Tecojate. Hostel Playa Parlama, on the beach just east of the village, has only old reviews, a dead website and no A/C information, so call +502 3090 5474 before counting on it. The nearest hotel is Hotel Maranatha in Nueva Concepción, about 50 minutes inland: basic but with A/C, 4.0 on Google from 125 reviews, $77 for both nights with free cancellation on Booking.com.
Lake Atitlán · 3 nights

The lake

Three volcanoes and a collection of Maya villages, connected by boats and roads where available. Consider Santa Catarina Palopó for quiet lake views or Panajachel for restaurants and easy logistics. Secluded waterfront hotels offer a different, slower stay.

Places to stay · A/C required

A/C is a must, and it’s rare here. Lake nights drop into the 50s °F, so most lake hotels don’t offer it. These three list A/C on Airbnb. Checked October 5, 2026 for Nov 21–24, two adults, fees included. None has a pool.

Dreams Lake cabin

Santa Catarina Palopó
Map

$318 for 3 nights · about $106/night

Our first lake choice: a private cabin room with its own bathroom in Santa Catarina Palopó, the quiet base the plan is built around. A/C and heating, hot water, Wi-Fi and breakfast included. Superhost, 4.87 from 69 reviews.

Keep in mind: No pool. That price is non-refundable; refundable is $347. It’s one room in a small cabin lodge, not a hotel with a restaurant, so plan dinners in Panajachel or at Casa Palopó.

Quijj Panajachel Apartment

Panajachel
Map

$265 for 3 nights · about $88/night

A one-bedroom apartment with central A/C and Wi-Fi, walkable to Panajachel’s restaurants and docks. Guest favorite: 4.91 from 74 reviews, Superhost.

Keep in mind: No pool or lake view listed. Panajachel is busier than Santa Catarina. Hot water isn’t listed, so ask the host.

Apartamento Chumil

Panajachel
Map

$265 for 3 nights · about $88/night

A one-bedroom loft from the same Superhost, with central A/C, hot water and Wi-Fi. Rated 4.93 from 42 reviews; guests say the area is easy to walk.

Keep in mind: No pool. Same busier-town tradeoff as Quijj; book whichever is free.

Listing & photos

Hotels with A/C: Hotel del Bosque (8.5 from 59 reviews, about $75/night before tax) and Posada de Don Rodrigo (pool, 8.3 from 228 reviews, about $265/night before tax), both in Panajachel, list A/C for the property but not in their room details. Ask the hotel to confirm your room has it before booking.
Earlier hotel picks · no A/C confirmed

Our lake picks before A/C became a requirement. None lists A/C: Regis lists a fan, and Villa Santa Catarina’s Booking.com facility list leaves it out even though Booking’s summary mentions it. Ask before booking any of these.
